Bergen, on Route 19 between Brockport and Le Roy

Bergen was settled in 1801, became a town in 1813 and is named after Bergen, Norway. It borders Monroe County to the east, and the village sits on Route 19 about nine miles south of Brockport. The Bergen Swamp, shared with the Town of Byron, was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1964, the first site in the country to receive that designation. After fires in 1866 and 1880, the village required new buildings in its business district to be built of brick, stone or iron.

More than half of the homes in the village were built before 1940, and across the town the typical home dates to around 1960. Older village homes often need multiple roof layers removed and rotted trim repaired, while newer homes in the town are reaching the age for a second roof and replacement windows.
