Established neighborhoods on Rochester's west side

Gates was incorporated in 1813 and named for Revolutionary War General Horatio Gates. It borders the west side of the City of Rochester, the geographic center of Monroe County is near Gates Town Hall, and Wegmans Food Markets is headquartered in town. With more than 13,000 homes, Gates is mostly established suburban neighborhoods.

The typical Gates home was built around 1970, so many are on their second or third roof and still have original or early replacement windows. Ranches, capes and split-levels from that era often have shallow attics, which makes good intake and exhaust ventilation important for preventing winter ice dams and summer heat buildup.
