Postwar neighborhoods between the lake and the bay

Irondequoit sits on Rochester's northern edge, with Lake Ontario along its northern border and its eastern boundary running through the middle of Irondequoit Bay. The town separated from Brighton in 1839, but most of its growth came after World War II: its population more than doubled between 1940 and 1960, from about 23,000 to more than 55,000 residents.

That boom shows in the housing. The typical Irondequoit home was built in the mid-1950s, and about a quarter of homes date to before 1940. Many of these houses are on their third or fourth roof and still have older windows and siding. Homes near the lake and the bay also see strong wind and lake-effect snow, so we pay close attention to ice and water barrier at the eaves, flashing and attic ventilation.
