The Village of Pittsford was incorporated in 1827 and sits in the north-central part of the Town of Pittsford, with the Erie Canal running through it. Historic canal warehouses, mills and silos now hold offices, shops and restaurants, the Pittsford Village Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Phoenix Hotel, built around 1826, is one of the finest surviving Federal-style buildings in Western New York. The town is also home to St. John Fisher and Nazareth, and several cobblestone farmhouses are on the National Register.
The village and town have very different housing. More than half of the homes in the village were built before 1940, while across the town the typical home dates to the early 1970s and nearly nine in ten are owner-occupied.
