High winds and hail can bruise shingles, break seals and compromise flashing in ways that are not obvious from the street. Whether you are in Greece, Webster or anywhere else around the Rochester area, a few steps right after a storm will save you trouble later.

Stay off the roof

Do not climb up to look. Wet shingles, steep pitches and loose debris make roofs dangerous, and you can damage shingles by walking on them. Everything useful can be done from the ground and from inside.

What to capture

  • Date-stamped photos of the house from every side, including any shingles, gutters or debris on the ground.
  • The date of the storm and what it was: wind, hail, a fallen branch.
  • Inside the house, any new ceiling stains, drips or damp insulation in the attic.
  • Damage to siding, gutters, fences or vehicles that happened at the same time.

Keep things from getting worse

If water is coming in, protect the area with a tarp or board and keep your receipts. Ask your insurance company what it covers for temporary repairs.

Get a proper inspection

Westside Developers inspects slope by slope, photographs the findings and explains whether targeted repairs or a full replacement makes sense under the manufacturer's guidelines. We give you a written estimate you can submit to your insurance company.

Coverage decisions, claim amounts, deductibles and approval of repairs are determined by your insurance carrier and your policy, not by us. Be cautious of anyone who knocks on your door after a storm and asks you to sign something on the spot.
